Foreigners in 2016 beat their record of buying homes in Spain
In absolute terms, foreigners bought a total of 53,495 homes in 2016, compared to 46,730 in 2015.
The foreign demand for housing in Spain continues to maintain a very estimable behaviour in the real estate recovery that is consolidating, to the point where it reached a new historical high in 2016 with 13.25% of all sales.
The result is not far from the last two years (13.2% in 2015 and 13% in 2014), consolidating its remarkable strength. From the historical low of 2009 (4.2%), accumulated seven consecutive years of growth, having tripled the percentage weight.
Of the growth of 13.25%, 19% corresponded to purchases made by British, although its weight has dropped by six points since the last quarter of 2015, a consequence of "the Brexit", which is already noted. However, they are still the foreign nationality that has more weight on the total of houses bought in Spain.
The province with the largest purchase of housing by foreigners is Alicante, on the Costa Blanca.
By provinces, Alicante leads the ranking with 43% of the homes sold are bought by foreigners, followed by Tenerife (40%), Malaga (34%), Baleares, (32.9) and Girona (30%). On the opposite side, the areas where foreigners are barely 1% of the sales are located in Lugo, Cáceres, A Coruña, Orense and Salamanca.
